this is the guy. his contact rates are incredibly excellent. walk rates are bad, but that's ok because his contact rates are incredibly excellent.

jonathan sanchez also has good contact rates. his 2006 stint in connecticut looks especially good. it was partly in relief. since then he's had trouble throwing strikes. if his flash of brilliance can become consistent, he can be something special.

with angel villalona, we usher in the era of the prospects born in the 90's. since he's 16, we don't have any stats for him.

emmanuel burriss is gonna make it. he has excellent contact, very good strike zone judgement, and speed. he plays shortstop and he's a switch-hitter. he's a probable strong contributor with an outside shot at being a difference maker. if the baseball cube fixes their misspelling, that link won't work.

brian wilson is very good at limiting home runs, and has shown control in the past. strikeout rates do not figure to be strong, but he could be useful as that sinker guy in the pen, like the braves always have.

billy sadler is a reliever who limits home runs, and has shown a vast improvement in the past two years. unfortunately, the baseball cube does not have his minor league numbers from 2006, which show a strong increase in strikeouts, as well as a 22-strikeout, 4-walk performance in the arizona fall league.

that's the ba list. kevin goldstein leaves out wilson and frandsen, instead including sharlon schoop and mike mcbryde. clayton tanner is his sleeper.

clayton tanner had good results in the northwest league as an 18-year-old. as an 18-year-old.

that wasn't a mistake. i said it twice on purpose.

and that's the giants. i was too harsh in the beginning of this article. every one of these guys has potential, most of them in ways that could make them stars. few of them are likely to get there, but it's an interesting list.

pitching injuries
while doing the rockies article i started to think about pitching, and how to succeed in colorado. that led me on a web search that ended up at dr mike marshall's page.

i'd seen the page before, liked what he was talking about, and gone on and forgotten about it and enjoyed baseball.

but i can't forget about it anymore.

pitching, the way it's done in the major leagues, causes terrible arm injuries, leading to pain and loss of function. i don't think anyone disagrees with that.

but it doesn't have to be that way.

mike marshall has developed a pitching delivery that does not cause injury. not only that, but it is more effective than the delivery currently in use.

mike marshall won the cy young award in 1974 when he threw 208 innings in relief for the los angeles dodgers, striking out 143 with a 2.42 era. he also has a phd in kinesiology, which is the science of human body movement.

no one in baseball is listening to him, but they're gonna have to when 10, 12, and 14 year-olds of today start coming up to the pros and outpitching those with traditional mechanics. not only that but they can pitch every day. they don't need rest because they don't hurt their arms.

i just hope he's around to see it. mike marshall is a hero, and by working to eliminate suffering, he's making the world a better place. until his goals are realized, the game i love will bring me sadness.

top prospects: rockies
it's popular to praise the rockies' system but (1) they have a lot of players who work out because of altitude, and (2) they haven't developed any stars.

3. Jason Hirsh, rhp
4. Dexter Fowler, of
5. Ian Stewart, 3b

8. Chris Iannetta, c
9. Jeff Baker, of
10. Chaz Roe, rhp

i don't wanna be the only hater, but come on, let's be reasonable. the rockies are nowhere close to winning. except in the way that any team can get lucky and win these days.

now that i've angered all the rockies fans, let's talk about the players.

ian stewart made great strides in 2006. it doesn't look like it cause his average went down. but his contact raised significantly. i was worried about his future, but i'm not anymore. where are they gonna play him though?

that's the thing. the rockies develop a lot of hitters because they have a friendly environment for hitters. it's not cause they feel confident or whatever it's because in high altitude, the breaking ball is easier to hit. so playing in colorado springs and denver is a learning environment for hitters. consequently, the rockies expect an overstock of hitters. for the same reason, they will have a shortage of pitchers. so the thing to do is trade their hitters for pitchers. but not just any pitcher. they need pitchers with the following two characteristics: velocity, and control. you gotta be able to throw hard, and throw strikes. and just keep throwing it in there. cause the only thing bad is a walk. you think a solo home run makes a difference? that's just one run. but a home run with men on base, now you got a problem. so throw it in there. make em swing.

i just told the rockies how to win, free of charge. but they're not gonna listen.

greg reynolds was the second pick of the draft, and it was a terrible pick. this is the proof that the rockies have no idea how to win. first of all, greg reynolds is not going to strike people out. you need strikeouts for a top pitcher in colorado. but the big thing is he's a curve ball guy. the curve ball doesn't work in colorado. they gave all that money to denny naegle, and darryl kile, and mike hampton. . . .

this is the point: look at the era's in colorado the past 12 years. however long they've been around. it's random. the era's are basically totally random. colorado is a ridiculous environment. it breaks the game. so you have to completely rethink what you're doing. the problem is you got baseball people, and you have to think like non-baseball people.

this colorado post has really thrown me for a loop. i got stuck at the "da . . ." of "darryl kile," and i've spent the last few days combing the internet. trying to figure this out. but i'm not gonna say i've figured it out. i sure would like to try some ideas, though.

one of the ideas that needs to be tried, in baseball in general, is the idea of pitchers who don't get injured.

carlos gonzalez has a lot of power but he's a little too aggressive. actually he's not too aggressive; he's too loose. in poker, the ideal way to play is tight-aggressive. you want to be selective with the hands you play, and aggressive (raise) when you do play a hand. baseball is the same. you want to be selective with the pitches you swing at, and aggressive when you do swing. he'll figure it out.

mark reynolds this is the fun one. he hit some bombs last year. 31 of them, in fact, which is more than he had in the doubles and triples department. so he's got the power. the thing that worries me is the contact. yes, he swings too much. so he could improve his contact by being more selective. but will it be enough? he's having this much trouble in high-a and double-a and he's old for his level. i don't know. there's a lot of raw talent there but will he have the discipline and intelligence to pull it off? i don't know. i bet he enjoys the game though.

tony pena has good control and not much else. he could make it. he pretty much already has.

brett anderson has not pitched in the pros yet. according to kevin goldstein, he's a lefty with very good leftiness.

your typical lefty employs good control, good home run limitation, and control of the running game. lefty home run limitation seems magical so i call it mojo. it tends to happen because the change-up is the out pitch against righties. changeups reduce home runs.

goldstein also mentioned emilio bonifacio and gerardo parra. we'll do them and greg smith and matt torra.

tyler greene is a shortstop with good speed who just doesn't look like he's gonna have enough to make it. hitting-wise. i mean, the problem is hitting. he's got some power but he doesn't make contact. and he doesn't have enough power that it's ok that he doesn't make contact. he just doesn't look like he's gonna make it.

skip schumaker is a centerfielder with speed and contact who bats left-handed. you know where i'm going with this. if he works the count, he can be an on-base guy against tough pitching. with his defense, he's a good guy to have on a major-league bench.

johnathan edwards. good start in rookie ball.

the cardinals are fine. they got albert pujols, chris carpenter, and guys who can play. that's all they need.

top prospects: pirates
a year ago, the pirates had a lot of talent with a lot of breakout potential. now, while the talent has matured, the breakout potential has cooled. the team is left with a solid young core, but no stars.

the rumors of neil walker's demise have been greatly exaggerated. he still makes good contact. he still has power. and what people may not be talking about is his patience has come way up. he's a third baseman now, so that hurts his status. but he's gonna hit in the major leagues.

brad lincoln had fantastic numbers at houston last year. he has very good control, he vastly improved his contact rates, and he seems to limit home runs. it looks like he'll progress quickly.

best case scenario these three become difference makers. but by the time they get there the rest of the team will be old. i don't know what the solution is. they need to find a lot more talent.
