top prospects: orioles
ok, we finished the national league! now it's time for the orioles.

there's not much here. a lot of these guys are 2005 draftees. this is a pretty crappy system.

if this guy is the top prospect, this is a terrible system. i don't know. he's the right age, i guess, for his level. he's decent at everything. those double-a numbers are not very meaningful because of small sample size. ok it looks like he's good enough at everything that he could improve at any time. that is, he's on the threshold of breakout.

adam loewen must have some kind of crazy stuff. the problem is he's not that good. he's not that good cause he walks people. this is common with baseball america. a kid has good stuff, or something, and they call him a prospect. well he is, from the point of view of if he gets control he'll make it. but from the point of view of likelihood, he's not much of a prospect. throwing strikes is hard.

i talked about hayden penn a month ago. i talked about him because aaron gleeman talked about him. i said he would succeed.
yeah he'll succeed! he pitched in the majors at 20. he struck out 120 batters in 110 innings in double-a. his control is decent.
why is this guy number 3 and not number 1? or number 2 behind chris ray?

ok chris ray. this kid's got the goods. i'm gonna get him in my fantasy league. unless somebody reads this. in 2005 he showed he had nothing left to prove in the minors. so they brought him up. he pitched well. he's 23.
his contact rates are great. his walk rates are good. his power rates are good. he's good.

chris ray was also in the rookies to watch article.
garrett olson is another 2005 draftee who did well in aberdeen. he's a lefty, which helps. he doesn't seem to have dominant stuff, but if he improves his control, and continues to limit home runs, he could make it.

james or j.j.? i don't know. 168 strikeouts in 159 innings is encouraging, but he needs to improve. he's a little old for his level. his wal, con, and pow are all just below major league quality. probly won't be more than a guy.

those bluefield results are pretty startling. i've never seen a .385 con before. course it was only 23 innings.

val was a hot prospect. then he tore his labrum. hopefully he's ok. he's got talent. if he can get it back together, he should do well. what does that mean? it means start in the major leagues. when might that happen? well, i would have said 2005. now i'll say 2007.
and that's the orioles. that wasn't too hard. course there's not much to talk about. the orioles system is pretty thin. no real stars, except possibly chris ray, but he's a reliever. hayden penn looks pretty good. nick markakis could be good. a lot of these guys are young. youth is good, but it takes a while.
