ok, the walk percentage is outta sight. i'm talking about 2005, in carolina. .223. with a pow of .165. this kid can play. he'll have some strikeouts, but he'll be ok.

ba has him as the top hitter for average (in the organization), with josh willingham as the best hitter for power. i don't know what they mean by "best hitter for power", exactly, but i think it's hermida. i had him as the 33rd best prospect in 2004.

Career Pitching Statistics for Scott Olsen:
Year Team Lg. Age Org Lvl IP H HR BB SO WAL CON HRP ERA

2005 Florida Marl NL 21 Fla MLB 20.1 21 5 10 21 .109 .744 .082 3.98

scott olsen. i mentioned him in july. i said he looks strikeout-y. it's true. 2004, for example: 158 strikeouts in 136 innings. 2005: 94 strikeouts in 80 innings. in double-a. then 21 strikeouts in 20 innings in the majors. needs a little work on control, but he's got what it takes. his pitch is the slider.

Career Pitching Statistics for Josh Johnson:

2005 Florida Marl NL 21 Fla MLB 12.1 11 0 10 10 .172 .792 .000 3.65

josh johnson limits home runs. but his wal and his con are nothing special. if he improves his control, he could make it.

the next guy on the list is chris volstad. according to baseball america, he's got the best control in the system. this is a little funny because he was in high school last year. we have no stats on him. he either didn't play or he didn't play much. i'm sure he's talented, but i can't make any judgements without any numbers.

Career Pitching Statistics for Aaron Thompson:

another 2005 draft pick, aaron thompson showed promise in rookie ball with a .703 con. then he got some work in low-a. he's a lefty.

Career Batting Statistics for Robert Andino:
Year Team Lg. Age Org Lvl AAB W K HR 23 WAL CON POW AVG

2005 Florida Marl NL 21 Fla MLB 44 5 8 0 4 .102 .818 .111 .159

robert andino is ranked this highly because of his defense. according to ba, he's the best infielder in the system. his bat is weak. he was substandard in wal, con, and pow in 2005. but he was young for his level. maybe he'll get it together.

Career Pitching Statistics for Taylor Tankersley:

lefties are always exciting. taylor tankersley, though, doesn't seem to have enough of either wal, con, or pow to make it. maybe he'll do something this year.

is "either" only supposed to be used with two options? what do you do when there are three?

the best hitter for power. well, he did post a .218 pow in triple-a. and the year before that a .186 pow in double-a. and the year before that a .195 pow in high-a. but i take issue with the "best hitter" part of the label. he strikes out a lot. it's questionable whether he'll succeed in the majors. he's already 26, which is normally past-peak for contact. his con in the majors should be around .700. that's already the cliff. but those walk percentages are nice. .177, .240 (!), and .219. he's a smart player. that's in his favor. maybe he'll continue to improve.

i don't know how old he is, but he was probably 21 or so in 2005. kris harvey has a long way to go. he's got the best outfield arm, they say, and that's nice, but the hitting is substandard in both the wal and con departments, and only decent in pow. maybe if he stopped swinging at everything he'd get more pitches to hit.

Career Pitching Statistics for Ryan Tucker:

the third 2005 pick in the top ten. ryan tucker had some strikeouts, but he also had some walks. he will improve as he continues to play.

ok! now let's look at some of these guys they traded for!

hanley ramirez came over in the josh beckett, mike lowell trade. by all accounts he's a slick fielder. i didn't know about him when i made my 2004 rankings, but if i had, i'd probably have put him in the 40's.

he makes great contact, so he's definitely usable, but he'll probably never hit for power. he's young, though. anything can happen.

he doesn't have to hit for power to be valuable. defense and contact-hitting, with a little more patience at the plate, is enough. and he'll steal a few bases, too.

Career Pitching Statistics for Anibal Sanchez:

2005 Portland East 21 Bos AA 57.1 53 5 16 63 .066 .720 .031 3.45

anibal sanchez is the second guy in the red sox trade (there are two more.) he struck out 95 in 78 innings of high-a last year, then struck out 63 in 57 innings of double-a. walk rates were good. if he plays in the majors this year, it'll be rough, but he's gonna make it (barring injury).

jesus delgado apparently has a good fastball. he's also got control problems. not likely to make it. still young, though. definitely worth acquiring.

another 21-year-old with a good fastball and control problems. this one's better, though. wal and con are both lower.

so that was two super prospects, and two kinda prospects, and dumping mike lowell's contract, for josh beckett and guillermo mota. pretty good haul. next up is the mets trade: carlos delgado for yusmeiro petit, mike jacobs, and grant psomas.

this guy is just a beast. look at 2004, for example. he struck out 122, walked 22, and gave up 47 hits in 83 innings. in the sally league. his con was .588. he was 19. then at the age of 20 he struck out 130 and walked 18 in double-a. yusmeiro petit. remember that name. major league hitters are gonna see him in their nightmares. i hope he stays healthy.

mike jacobs. well, he has excellent power. 64 extra-base hits in 433 at-bats in double-a is nothing to sneeze at. and then, of course, he hit for power in the majors. but i have the feeling pitchers will adjust to him in 2006, and not throw him so many fastballs. he's gonna make it though. it'd be nice if he took more pitches.

grant psomas had a power breakout in 2005, but he still has trouble making contact. and he's in a-ball. it doesn't look good. 2006 is the make-or-break year.

so they got one best pitching prospect in baseball, one decent first baseman, one longshot power hitter, and one dumped contract, for what? for free? i gotta say that looks pretty good.

yeah yeah yeah carlos delgado. but carlos delgado at 13.5 million ain't that great. and the marlins have a serious world-series nucleus here. same thing they did in 98. i am not kidding.

the other deals were minor. they traded luis castillo for travis bowyer and scott tyler.
