top prospects: braves
baseball america has been doing team prospect lists since november 7. this seems like a good point of departure for our own prospect list. i'll comment on the ba top 10, then look at the rest. we'll start with the braves.

1. Andy Marte, 3b
2. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, c
3. Elvis Andrus, ss
4. Yunel Escobar, ss
5. Anthony Lerew, rhp
6. Joey Devine, rhp
7. Chuck James, lhp
8. Brandon Jones, of
9. Eric Campbell, 3b
10. Beau Jones, lhp

ba says there's depth at short, catcher, and pitcher. that seems to be the case. there aren't too many that are close to the majors, though. but i guess they got that covered last year.

Career Batting Statistics for Andy Marte:
Year Team Lg. Age Org Lvl AAB W K HR 23 WAL CON POW AVG
2001 Danville App 17 Atl Rk 125 20 45 1 6 .138 .640 .088 .200

2003 Myrtle Beach Caro 19 Atl A 472 69 109 16 36 .128 .769 .143 .285
2004 GCL Braves GCL 20 Atl Rk 15 2 2 1 4 .118 .867 .385 .467
2004 Greenville Sou 20 Atl AA 390 60 105 23 29 .133 .731 .182 .269

2005 Atlanta Brav NL 21 Atl MLB 59 7 13 0 3 .106 .780 .065 .140

he's a red sock now, but we'll go ahead and talk about him. he's gonna be good. no shit. his power is huge. his patience is good. his contact is good for his age. he's only 21. 21 years old with a pow of .157 in triple-a. if the braves had never signed chipper they could have signed furcal and kept marte to play third. if if if. but yeah he's a stone killer. one of the top prospects in the majors.

Career Batting Statistics for Jarrod Saltalamacchia:
Year Team Lg. Age Org Lvl AAB W K HR 23 WAL CON POW AVG
2003 GCL Braves GCL 18 Atl Rk 134 31 33 2 13 .188 .754 .149 .239
2004 Rome SAL 19 Atl A 326 39 83 10 21 .107 .745 .128 .272
2005 Myrtle Beach Caro 20 Atl A 459 57 99 19 36 .110 .784 .153 .314

we discussed him a few days ago in the rookies to watch article. he's moved up nicely, and pretty much dominated high-a. ba has him as the organization's best hitter for average. in the minors. in the majors, it's chipper jones. oh yeah, that's why they signed him. one of the reasons. but we're too far afield. jarrod saltalamacchia is a year younger than brian mccann and could be just as good. one of them's gonna have to go somewhere else. but yeah. good strike zone judgement, great power . . . could use some contact. he'll get it.

Career Batting Statistics for Elvis Andrus:
Year Team Lg. Age Org Lvl AAB W K HR 23 WAL CON POW AVG
2005 GCL Braves GCL 0 Atl Rk 166 19 28 3 7 .103 .831 .072 .295
2005 Danville App 0 Atl Rk 18 4 4 0 1 .182 .778 .071 .278

this is basically no information. ba says he's good. he must be really athletic, or something. probably a good fielder. i can't really say anything. he did fine in rookie ball. ok i just found out his age. he turned 17 in august. so he's a superkiller.

Career Batting Statistics for Yunel Escobar:
Year Team Lg. Age Org Lvl AAB W K HR 23 WAL CON POW AVG
2005 Danville App 0 Atl Rk 30 5 4 2 3 .143 .867 .192 .400
2005 Rome SAL 0 Atl A 198 14 30 4 16 .066 .848 .119 .313

he's apparently 22. escobar hit well, but he needs to progress quickly if he's going to make the majors.

Career Pitching Statistics for Anthony Lerew:
Year Team Lg. Age Org Lvl IP H HR BB SO WAL CON HRP ERA
2002 Danville App 19 Atl Rk 83.0 60 2 25 75 .075 .757 .009 1.73
2003 Rome SAL 20 Atl A 143.2 112 7 43 127 .073 .766 .017 2.38
2004 Myrtle Beach Caro 21 Atl A 144.0 145 12 46 125 .074 .783 .027 3.75
2005 Mississippi Sou 22 Atl AA 75.2 70 6 32 64 .097 .785 .026 3.93
2005 Richmond IL 22 Atl AAA 72.1 63 9 23 53 .076 .811 .040 3.48
2005 Atlanta Brav NL 22 Atl MLB 8.0 9 1 5 5 .132 .848 .036 5.62

one of the many rookies who made the show in 2005. lerew has good contact rates, good home run rates, and decent control. he needs to improve to be effective in the majors. he apparently has the best fastball. of the braves. minor leaguers. marte has the best power bat.

Career Pitching Statistics for Joey Devine:
Year Team Lg. Age Org Lvl IP H HR BB SO WAL CON HRP ERA
2003 NC State NCAA 0 0 NCA 65.2 49 4 16 78 .061 .683 .024 2.19

2005 Atlanta Brav NL 0 Atl MLB 5.0 6 2 5 3 .192 .857 .111 12.60

he struck everybody out in college. then he went to double-a and struck everybody out. then he went to the majors. all in the same year. joey's got control issues, but he's definitely a top prospect. best slider, according to ba.

Career Pitching Statistics for Chuck James:
Year Team Lg. Age Org Lvl IP H HR BB SO WAL CON HRP ERA
2003 Danville App 21 Atl Rk 50.1 26 1 19 68 .097 .616 .009 1.25

2005 Atlanta Brav NL 23 Atl MLB 5.2 4 0 3 5 .125 .762 .000 1.59

let's look, for example, at his myrtle beach line: 59 strikeouts in 41 innings with 20 hits and 1 home run. and 8 walks. retarded. now let's look at his mississippi line: 104 strikeouts in 86 innings with 62 hits and 4 home runs. 18 walks. just for fun let's check out his 2004 rome line: 156 strikeouts in 132 innings with 92 hits and 6 home runs. 48 walks. he'll pitch in the majors.

it's the changeup, apparently, that does it.

Career Batting Statistics for Brandon Jones:
Year Team Lg. Age Org Lvl AAB W K HR 23 WAL CON POW AVG
2004 Danville App 20 Atl Rk 211 24 33 3 11 .102 .844 .079 .297

organization's best athlete. he's also a pretty good hitter. beat the hell out of a-ball. why didn't he get more playing time? did he get injured?

Career Batting Statistics for Eric Campbell:
Year Team Lg. Age Org Lvl AAB W K HR 23 WAL CON POW AVG
2004 GCL Braves GCL 18 Atl Rk 212 17 47 7 7 .074 .778 .085 .251

2005 Danville App 19 Atl Rk 262 28 64 18 28 .097 .756 .232 .313

ok, well the thing that jumps out at you is the pow of .232. i don't really know what to do with that. i mean it's freakish. contact could be a problem, and we'd like to see him get a little more patient. but the power is good. did i mention the power?

Career Pitching Statistics for Beau Jones:
Year Team Lg. Age Org Lvl IP H HR BB SO WAL CON HRP ERA
2005 GCL Braves GCL 18 Atl Rk 35.0 25 0 16 41 .110 .685 .000 3.86

well, that's a good line. that's about all i can say. he has the organization's best curveball. he's a lefty. ba likes the youth. youth is crucial, for a prospect.

i'll do the rest later.
Comments:
i looked at the rest of the organization, and there's not much to say. maybe i'll come back to it. for now, i'm gonna move on.
