adam laroche
braves journal has an article about adam laroche.

it's not very hopeful about his 2006 season, but my analysis is different:

he vastly improved his contact in 2005. that is a tough thing to do. it also indicates that his low batting average was due to luck.

a contact improvement like this is often a precursor to a breakout season. one would hope he'd take a few more pitches. but as he heads toward his peak, his power should go up, making him a potentially dangerous hitter.

the article also points out the possibility of matt diaz as the backup. that's a nice pickup for the braves. as a right-handed bat, he can sub in for johnson, langerhans, or laroche against tough lefties, either as a starter or pinch-hitter.

he hasn't gotten much playing time in the majors, but diaz has shown prodigious power in the minors the past few seasons. he's exactly the kind of hitter who can give lefties fits. it'd be nice if he walked more.
