al pitching
ok time for the previously promised analysis of american league starters.

era wal con pow
esteban loaiza 2.18 .068 .780 .141
pedro martinez 2.74 .079 .717 .128
tim hudson 2.97 .074 .843 .099
jamie moyer 3.01 .090 .819 .160
gil meche 3.14 .079 .813 .157
barry zito 3.17 .105 .835 .149
mark mulder 3.25 .061 .840 .149
mike mussina 3.29 .044 .743 .111
roger clemens 3.36 .071 .723 .180
david wells 3.40 .024 .873 .141

you know, i just can't figure out why the yankees, mariners, and a's win so many games. any ideas?

i'm so funny. there's basically two ways a pitcher can be good: not walk people, and strike people out. those on the list with high cons, hudson, moyer, meche, zito, and mulder, have benefitted from good defense. but not david wells. he's a freak. the yankees on the list have succeeded despite their defense.

the best guys here are loaiza, martinez, mussina, and clemens. is clemens really gonna retire this year?

who else should make the list?

era wal con pow
tim wakefield 4.72 .116 .776 .199
andy pettitte 4.78 .062 .795 .180
roy halladay 3.70 .048 .805 .218
john lackey 5.47 .083 .814 .225
jeremy bonderman 5.06 .073 .815 .204
ted lilly 4.83 .085 .815 .234
kyle lohse 3.96 .060 .813 .199

corey lidle 5.32 .056 .840 .198
john thomson 5.90 .052 .848 .251

all of these guys have had bad pow luck, except ponson. you gotta feel for thomson, with that 5.90 era. and whaddyaknow lilly has been the best a's pitcher this year.

what happened to barry zito?

2001 .103 .747 .114
2002 .093 .786 .152
2003 .105 .835 .149

not a good trend. he didn't deserve the cy last year, btw. pedro did:

2002 .055 .679 .109

are you kidding me?
